The way someone is made to feel during the birth of their baby and how they feel about it afterwards can bring about intense, difficult feelings and sometimes lead to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
There are so many factors that contribute to how someone feels about their experience and difficult emotions may be present straight after or can come to the surface months or years later . The 3 Step Rewind is a programme to support the processing of a difficult or traumatic birth experience.
what happens during a traumatic or difficult event
When someone is experiencing intense emotions, a highly stressful or traumatic experience, the emotion centre in the brain responsible for triggering the fight and flight response is hyper aroused, meaning all other functions including the Neo Cortex thinking brain shuts down, so you can't rationalise what is happening or talk yourself through it. Your body is in survival mode. The part of the brain responsible for processing memories and filing them away as a long term memory is also shut down. The intense emotions experienced are linked to this event and the brain gets encoded with these emotions, which is why a future experience, or something someone says, or a piece of music or smell for example can trigger people to have flash backs, or even feel they are reliving the trauma.
ABOUT THE REWIND TECHNIQUE
The 3 Step Rewind is a technique based on an Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) pattern known as ‘The Fast Phobia Cure’. Hypnotherapy techniques are used to encourage relaxation and to build coping strategies. It supports your brain to detach the difficult emotions from that experience, process and file it away as a long term memory. The memory is not forgotten, but processed, shifted and changed. After going through the 3 Step Rewind, some people find they are then able to remember some of the positive memories linked to the birth of their baby, that they may have forgotten about.
OUR TIME TOGETHER
I will see you for 3 sessions in your home. Each session is 1-1.5 hrs.
If you prefer to see me out of your home, please let me know and we can discuss.
Session 1 is about us building a connection and I will ask some questions about how you felt during the experience. You don’t have to tell me the whole birth story but you can if you want to. We focus on the feelings around it, how it still impacts you now and how you want to feel moving forward. We do a relaxation together and you get a recording to listen to before the next session.
Session 2 is usually around a week later. I guide you through recalling (in your mind) the event, firstly double disassociating yourself from the experience and then visually rewinding it (like you would rewind a video tape). You do it twice more to disassociate and then associate yourself with the experience. The process helps your brain to process the difficult feelings attached to it. I’m guiding you the whole time.
Session 3 is about focusing on moving forwards and includes a guided relaxation to visualise your future self without the difficult feelings. You get a recording of this to listen back to.
I’m there to walk along side you through this process and will be touch between sessions to see how you are and if you have experienced any changes.
